Crystallized Breath of the Void

In this second residency at lagos | Mexico City, Karla Silva has been able to deepen her research into symbolically bringing together what is dispersed; visually manifesting what is usually understood as separate, linking the invisible with the visible, and exploring the meaning of appearing and remaining.

Through a sculptural process using wire mesh, paper, stone, glass, and thread, she creates an installation that reflects on materiality—not as a static object, but as a dynamic event sustained by the geometry of the toroid. This three-dimensional geometric figure is generated by a closed, flat curve (such as a circle) rotating around a fixed axis external to it, resulting in a shape similar to a ring, doughnut, or tire. It is a key figure in many contemporary metaphysical currents. It represents the way energy moves at any level of existence. It is significant for both scientists and mystics.

In the installation Karla produced during this month-long residency, she presents toroids that act as matrices of flow within the five elements (earth, air, water, fire, and ether) in the formation of reality:

From one edge of the studio, conceived as a “beginning,” lies the center of the toroid. The singularity of Ether sustains space and pure intention; from this zero point, Fire drives radiant expansion outward (the outgoing pole), while Air provides the rotation and curvature necessary to distribute that energy. As the flow reaches its limit and begins its return, Water enables contraction and magnetic cohesion back toward the center (the incoming pole), allowing that at the intersection of these dynamic forces, Earth crystallizes as the dense and tangible surface—thus manifesting physical reality as a perpetual, self-sustaining breath.
