Lagos was founded in 2018 by visual artist Luis Carrera-Maul at our Mexico City location, expanding to Berlin in 2023 and to Oaxaca and Baja California in 2025.

LAGOS IS A MODEL OF CULTURAL EXCHANGE

Our program aims to support artists at crucial moments in their careers, whether emerging, mid-career or established, during their residency period and beyond.

The program consists of artistic production periods in our studios, where each artist benefits from the exchange with other artists, curators and a wider audience, thus enhancing the visibility and reach of their work.

Lagos differs from other residency projects in Mexico City thanks to its exhibition program, as well as for its active and diverse community. For Lagos it is a priority to support local artists through a connection with international conversations, while foreign agents participate in the local context.

LAGOS IS COMMUNITY

It is through the active community that gathers around our activities, as well as the links between agents, that we generate that we are a fundamental platform for artistic development.

The number of creative agents converging on Lagos is active, significant and growing. Networks and dialogues between collaborators transcend and are catalyzed around Lagos, turning it into a creative convergence center for contemporary art.

We seek allies with common goals - nonprofit organizations, curatorial groups, independent spaces, galleries, fairs, biennials, other residency programs and related projects - to create opportunities and exchanges in a model of amplified collaboration.

LAGOS IS A RESPONSE

Mexico City is one of the most interesting and dynamic artistic centers in the world. In this time of global and political uncertainty, the local contemporary art scene grows and persists, through individual and collective initiatives.

Our city is iconic for its creative independence and resilience, but it lacks a long-lasting and sustainable infrastructure. Lagos recognizes the real needs of its community and proposes new models of artistic support.

LAGOS IS CONTEMPORARY: CRUCIAL AND URGENT

Lagos seeks to continue with a committed, responsible and active participation in the most important issues of our time, through art.

Through our collective and collaborative model, which favors ideas, artistic production and recognizes that it is important to support the agents dedicated to it, we seek to generate a greater impact on culture. We are confident that our organization has the ability to take on this important challenge to benefit us all.
