Baja California

The lagos | Baja California Artist-in Residence  Program takes place in Tecate, Baja California, and focuses on reflecting on the concept of the border as nature. Artists will explore both the geopolitical borders between Mexico and the United States, as well as the borders between the body, nature, and space. The residency is offered in spaces designed around the five elements of matter, such as the Air House and Earth House, to foster creation in a unique natural environment. Additionally, the program encourages dialogue with the local communities of Tecate and Tijuana. The program offers two modalities: personal (for individual projects) and collaborative (to work alongside artist Irma Sofía Poeter). Artists will receive close curatorial and logistical support and will have the opportunity to develop projects that will be shared on lagos' digital platforms. They will also be able to connect to local and international professional networks through the Lagos I Platform. The residency is open year-round, with both personal and collaborative modalities available. The duration ranges from 1 to 3 months, and monthly fees include all basic services and local transportation.

In collaboration with artist Irma Sofía Poeter and curator Eduardo Lozano Murillo, lagos expands to Tecate, Baja California, Mexico, offering an artist residency focused on the concept of the border as nature. Set within Arcadia, the living artistic project of Irma Sofía, the residency unfolds in a space inspired by the five elements of matter, each represented by a house/studio. Artists may choose to work in either Casa Aire (Air House) or Casa Tierra (Earth House), two spaces specifically designed to foster inspiration and artistic creation.

The residency invites participants to reflect on the border as nature—understood not only as the physical and geopolitical boundary between Mexico and the United States, but also as a broader concept that challenges divisions between the human body and the natural world, between space and species. This program seeks to explore the dichotomy between border and nature, inviting artists to research and create at this intersection of ideas.

Residency Modalities

a) Personal Residency
For artists seeking to develop a solo project in an isolated, focused environment. Both Casa Aire and Casa Tierra provide the perfect setting for this modality.

b) Collaborative Residency
For artists interested in collaborating with renowned textile artist Irma Sofía Poeter, under principles of equity, shared authorship, and fair compensation. This modality requires a prior dialogue between both artists to define the project’s scope.
