RESIDENT 2022
David Troice
MÉX - USA
David Troice (Born 1990) is a Mexican-American artist based in Mexico City, whose art is focused on the creation of steel origami sculptures inspired by the geometry and physics of the universe. Influenced by the work of Escher, Vasarely, and Kapoor, Troice’s work challenges the viewer’s perception of space and dimensionality.
Troice meticulously folds and assembles steel sheets into complex, three-dimensional forms, creating works that are both elegant and durable. His sculptures are a study in precision and patience, requiring careful planning and execution to achieve the desired effect.
Troice is fascinated by the way that seemingly disparate phenomena, such as the spiral patterns of galaxies and the hexagonal shapes of beehives, can be explained by the same mathematical principles. His process of folding steel into complex geometric shapes is a way of discovering those hidden structures that underlie the natural world.
Ultimately, Troice seeks to push the boundaries of what is possible, both in terms of form and function, and to create works that resonate with people on a deep and meaningful level. Through his work, he invites the viewer to explore the endless variations of the universe and to contemplate the mysteries of existence.
Troice pursued a degree in industrial design in Mexico City before transferring to Boston to complete his studies, combining industrial design with sculpture, earning a BFA in 2015. This interdisciplinary academic background provided him with a strong foundation in design principles and techniques while fostering his artistic exploration. He has since showcased his work in various exhibitions throughout Mexico, the US and Europe.
