RESIDENT 2023

Riley Strom

USA

Riley Strom is a visual artist based in Los Angeles, California and New York, USA. In 2013 she received her BA in BA from Sarah Lawrence College. In 2014, Riley co-founded 99¢ Plus Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. She lived in Philadelphia where she received her MFA in Painting from the Tyler School of Art. Currently, Strom primarily produces paintings in which she explores the gesturality and transparency of pigment, as well as the concepts of memory, performance and identity.

In her Albero project, Riley Strom's goal was to observe and reproduce Castilblanco de los Arroyos through abstraction.

During her residency at lagos, Strom has decided to take advantage of being in a new space to focus on the immolation of the specificity of light and color that characterize the region where the residency is located. Riley premixes the palette for her paintings in each of the locations according to the colors of the landscape and the time of day. She then uses this palette in the studio to create on paper, producing either completely abstract compositions or using experiential motifs of space and civil architecture and the natural terrain of the CDMX.
