Condo CDMX: Babies Born Without Brains – New Works, Chicago

Isabelle Frances McGuire, Rebecca Lothan, Antonio López

September 26 – October 26, 2019

This is an arena for play. Impulsive and subconscious. Fondling each other with criminal intentions. Fuck it, I want to be bad. But I am not good at evil because I am in need. That's why I appease myself with hot girls, kittens, puppies, liquor, LIQUOR, LIQUOR, STEAL, STEAL, T, T, T, THC, CBD! If the job doesn't mean shit, does that mean it's bad? SHIT I WANT TO PLAY.

Presented in Lagos during the Condo CDMX, BBWNB is an exhibition of works by Isabelle Francis McGuire and the curatorial/collaborative duo New Works, directed by Rebecca Lothan and Antonio López. Babies Born Without Brains content should be managed by you, and should be managing you.

Isabelle Frances McGuire is an American artist who lives and works in Chicago. She graduated from a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work focuses on themes of play, acting and pop. Her material choices include silicone, plastics, modified sugars, wheat, corn, and pictures. Relevant exhibits include I'm a Cliche at Prairie in Chicago and upcoming shows at Sibling Gallery in Toronto and From The Desk of Lucy Bull in Los Angeles.

Founded in 2018, New Works is an artist-led project space, based in Humboldt Park, Chicago. They present a wide range of experimental expositions, avoiding a technical approach. Intermittent use of white cube space vs. the harsh industrial nature of an active study comments on the contingent nature of curatorial arrangements. New Works is directed by Antonio López and Rebecca Lothan.

Rebecca Lothan (b.1992) is a Chicago-based curator and artist. She graduated from a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis. She co-founded and co-directs New Works, a project space based in Humboldt Park, Chicago.

Antonio López (b. Quito, 1993) is a multidisciplinary artist. He has a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago - IL (2017). His recent work interrogates –through painting, installations and curatorship– the flexibility of the contemporary being: the structures that govern them, their instruments of documentation and historicization. He co-founded and co-runs New Works. In 2019 he founded NAVE, a residency program for artists based in Guayllabamba, Ecuador. He has served as Artist in Residence at Vermont Studio Center - VT and Heima Artist Residency, Seyðisfjörður - Iceland. His work has been exhibited in spaces such as Mana Contemporary, Miami; Trestle Projects, NY; Frontera 115, CDMX; Ox, Bow School of Art, MI; among others. He divides his time between Quito and Chicago.

Condo is a collaborative exhibition of 21 galleries in 11 spaces in Mexico City.
