Gonzalo García

Gonzalo García is a visual artist and contemporary painter whose work is characterised by a profound exploration of the human condition, memory, the fragility of the body, and a critical dialogue with the history of classical art. His work moves between rigorous figuration and conceptual fragmentation, using painting as a means of both anatomical and psychological dissection.

Throughout his career, his work has been exhibited in solo and group shows both in Mexico and abroad, earning him a prominent place on the scene of new Mexican figurative painting. His technical and conceptual rigour has earned him various artist residencies and selections in national painting biennials (such as the Rufino Tamayo Painting Biennial or the Artemergente Biennial), establishing him as a leading voice in understanding the relevance of the medium of painting in the 21st century.

In an art scene heavily focused on the conceptual and the digital, Gonzalo García’s practice reaffirms the craft of painting as an act of critical thinking. His work suggests that the canvas remains a vital space for questioning contemporary violence, loneliness and the persistence of memory through the visual heritage of the West.
