In September, during her residency, Irma Sofía Poeter developed It’s a GIRL!, opening one door and closing another. She tells us, “This is my first sketch of a series of works that I know will unfold in the future. It is closely related to the New Man series—a body of work that explores the possibility of deconstructing hegemonic masculinity and embraces alternative masculinities in which ways of being and existing in the world stand out differently.

I’m beginning to imagine the deconstruction of that same hegemonic masculinity within women. How can we alter, transform, or recreate this structure? As more women enter and thrive within this vertical, patriarchal system, we end up conforming to and settling into the very system we once rebelled against. Who is this New Woman who embraces both her masculine and feminine sides and projects that balance in the creation of a new and harmonious world?”
