RE-EXPEDITION IV: Ongoing Identities / The Strength of Us

Finding oneself in the middle of nowhere has long been the story of women. “Nowhere” as a space of invisibility—where heteropatriarchy has deemed it appropriate for us to be. Yet this is a space we no longer accept, and one in which we are now steadily reclaiming ground.

It is into this space of “nowhere” that Marisa Maza has ventured. She has traveled to the past and explored the present world, connecting these timelines through a decolonial map in the making. On this journey, the artist has crossed continents, searched through both urban and Amazonian jungles, delved into archives and explored various cities—discovering extraordinary women, stories of travelers, powerful entities who have overcome conditions of oppression and discrimination. During her residency at lagos | estudios y residencias, we traveled together to the city of Querétaro to exhibit her body of work ExPeditions at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Querétaro. We now present the documentation of that exhibition online.

With this wealth of knowledge and experience, Marisa has created works that invite us into a reflective space to Re-Expedite the present. Through a symbolic act, she offers us a possibility—to chart a new course for the presence of women in society. From here, the current exhibition emerges.

Making ourselves visible, reclaiming ourselves on our own terms, is the first step. Weaving a network to support one another and together emerge toward a ReConstruction of humanity’s history—and with it, contribute to a more equitable balance between psyche and reason—is the second. And the third, each of us will write for ourselves.
